During 2006, unintentional injuries accounted for nearly a quarter of the estimated 119.2 million visits to hospital emergency departments (EDs) in the United States. Unintentional injuries sustained during sports and recreation are very common and frequently require emergency care; about 12,000 Americans are treated each day in the ED for sportsand recreation-related injuries. Approximately two-thirds of all sports-related injury ED visits are for children.
